"Before a Beethoven Symphony we are all equal. Whether we come from Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Turkey, or Syria, we must approach the music with the same humility, curiosity, knowledge and passion. The attitude we must have towards the music forces us to develop the reason and conscience correctly presumed by the first article of the United Nations’ declaration to be inherent in human nature."

Besides his career as a pianist and a conductor, Daniel Barenboim, born in Argentina to parents of Jewish Russian descent, accomplished numerous educational projects and committed himself to musical education in nursery schools in Berlin, Ramallah and Seville. Together with Edward Said, he founded in 1999 the «West-Eastern Divan Orchestra» in Palestine. It is a youth orchestra based in Seville in Spain, consisting of musicians from countries in the Middle East of Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian backgrounds. He proved by this achievement that it was possible, thanks to the power of art, to develop a dialogue between hostile parties like the Israelis and the Palestinians.
